Step 1: Research the breed, not the listing

Step 2: Shortlist two or three breeders

Step 3: Verify before you trust

Ask for a live video call — not a pre-recorded video. Ask to see the kitten with its mother and to see where the kittens are raised. Step 4: Read the contract before paying

Step 5: Pay safely

Avoid untraceable payment methods. Get a receipt that states what the deposit covers and the terms for refunds. Never pay in full before you have seen the kitten alive.

Step 6: Prepare while you wait

Step 7: Book a vet visit immediately
