The fastest way to judge a breeder is not their website — it is how they answer direct questions. An ethical breeder will welcome every question on this list. Anyone who avoids them is telling you something.
Health and testing
- What health testing do you do on the parent cats? Ask specifically, and for the results.
- Can I see the kitten with its mother? Always. If not, ask why.
- What vaccinations and treatments will the kitten have had? Ours are F3 vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and vet-checked before leaving.
- Is there a health guarantee, in writing? Get the terms, not a verbal promise.
- Can you give me your vet’s details? A good breeder has a long relationship with theirs.
Raising and socialisation
- Where are the kittens raised? Kittens raised underfoot in a home are better adjusted than those in sheds or cages.
- How much handling do they get? Daily human contact from an early age is essential.
- At what age do kittens go home? Twelve to fourteen weeks is the norm — earlier usually means corners were cut.
- Are they litter trained and eating solids? They should be both.
Paperwork and transparency
- Are you registered, and can I see the number? Ask for the registry and membership number, then verify it.
- Will I receive registration or pedigree papers? Understand exactly what you are getting.
- Can I see a written contract? It protects both sides and should cover health, desexing and what happens if things go wrong.
Visiting and aftercare
- Can I visit, or at least have a video call? Refusal is a serious red flag.
- What support do you offer after I take the kitten home? We offer lifetime aftercare advice.
- What happens if I can no longer keep the cat? Responsible breeders take their cats back.
Red flags to walk away from
- Pressure to pay a deposit immediately, or by bank transfer or gift card
- No video call, no photos of the kitten with its mother
- Kittens available at only six or seven weeks
- Multiple unrelated breeds advertised at once
- Vague or defensive answers about health testing
- Prices far below the normal range for the breed
