Cat Purchase Contracts: What to Look For

A written contract is not a lack of trust — it is the clearest sign that a breeder takes responsibility for the cats they bring into the world. It protects you, and it protects the kitten. Here is what a fair agreement should contain.

Clauses that protect you

• Health guarantee. A defined period during which a congenital or hereditary condition is covered, with a clear remedy — replacement, refund, or contribution to vet costs.
• Vaccination and vet record. A written record of what has been done and when.
• Desexing terms. Whether the kitten is already desexed, or whether you are agreeing to desex by a certain age.
• Registration paperwork. Which registry, and what you will receive.
• Return clause. A commitment that the breeder will take the cat back at any point in its life if you can no longer keep it. This is the single strongest indicator of an ethical breeder.

Terms to read carefully

Some conditions are reasonable when you understand them. A pet-only registration means your cat is not sold with breeding rights — entirely normal and not a reflection on quality. A desexing agreement is standard for pet homes. What matters is that these terms are explained to you before you sign, not discovered afterwards.

Terms you should question

• A contract with no health guarantee at all
• Clauses that waive all responsibility the moment the kitten leaves
• Restrictions that forbid you from taking your cat to a vet of your choice
• No return clause, or one that only applies for a few days
• Any pressure to sign without time to read it
