How Old Should a Kitten Be Before Leaving Its Mother?

It is one of the most important questions in kitten adoption, and one of the easiest for a buyer to get wrong. The age at which a kitten leaves its mother shapes their behaviour for life.

The short answer

Twelve to fourteen weeks. That is the window responsible breeders work to, and it is the age our own kittens go home. Anything earlier means a kitten has missed part of its education.

What happens between eight and fourteen weeks

A great deal of development happens in this period, and almost none of it is physical:

• Bite inhibition. Kittens learn how hard is too hard by playing with littermates, who squeal and stop playing. Kittens removed early often bite harder and do not grow out of it easily.
• Social skills. Reading other cats’ body language is learned from the mother and siblings.
• Confidence. A secure, well-handled kitten in this window becomes a calm adult.
• Litter habits. Kittens learn reliably from their mother over these weeks.
• Weaning onto solids. They should be confidently eating solid food before they leave.

What early separation can look like later

Kittens taken at six or seven weeks are more likely to develop problems that are difficult to undo: over-grooming, wool sucking, fearfulness, inappropriate biting, and difficulty with other cats. These are not certainties, but the risk is real and well documented.

Vaccination timing matters too

The core vaccination course runs across several weeks and is not complete until around twelve to sixteen weeks. A kitten leaving at eight weeks has not completed it, which is another reason the later window is safer. You can read more in our kitten vaccination guide.

A question worth asking any breeder
