Cat Breeder Red Flags: 12 Signs to Walk Away

Most people searching for a kitten are looking for reasons to say yes. This guide is deliberately the opposite: the signs that should make you say no. Any one of these is worth pausing on. Several together mean walk away.

Red flags

1. Refuses a visit or video call. The clearest warning sign there is. There is no legitimate reason to refuse.
2. Will not show the kitten with its mother. You should always see them together.
3. Kittens available under eight weeks. Twelve to fourteen weeks is the responsible minimum.
4. No health records, or vague ones. “Vaccinated” without dates and details is not a record.
5. Pressure to pay today. Manufactured urgency is a sales tactic, not a sign of demand.
6. Payment by bank transfer, gift card or crypto only. These are unrecoverable.
7. Many unrelated breeds available at once. Usually a broker, not a breeder.
8. Photos that appear elsewhere online. Reverse image search them.
9. No contract, or one that waives all responsibility.
10. No return clause. Ethical breeders always take their cats back.
11. Kittens kept in cages, sheds or garages. Ask to see where they live.
12. Defensive or evasive answers about health testing.

What good looks like instead

A good breeder asks you questions, takes time, provides a written health record, offers a contract with a return clause, and gives you aftercare that lasts well beyond collection day.
