Why Do Pedigree Kittens Cost More?

It is a fair question: why would anyone pay $2,500 for a kitten when cats are available for free? The answer is that the price of a responsibly bred kitten is mostly made up of things you never see.

What you are actually paying for

Health testing of the parent cats. Screening breeding cats for inherited conditions costs real money every year, and it is the single most important thing a breeder does.

Veterinary care. Pregnancy, birth and kittenhood all involve vet visits — not only when something goes wrong, but routinely. Our kittens are vet-checked, F3 vaccinated, microchipped and wormed before they leave.

Nutrition. Breeding cats and growing kittens need high-quality food, and kittens need it around the clock.

Socialisation. This is the largest hidden cost of all. Hundreds of hours of daily, gentle handling — by adults and children, with household noises, grooming, nail handling and car rides — is what turns a kitten into a confident family cat.

Registration and administration. Registry membership, pedigree documentation and litter registration all carry fees.

What a cheap kitten usually means

When a pedigree kitten is priced far below the market — Australian pedigree Russian Blues generally sit between $2,400 and $3,000 — something has usually been skipped. Most often it is health testing, vaccination, adequate socialisation, or the mother’s care. Those savings tend to resurface as vet bills and behavioural difficulties.

Judging value rather than price
