People often ask whether they should choose a male or a female, and the honest answer is that for a desexed companion cat, the difference is smaller than most expect. Here is what genuinely differs.

Size

This is the most reliable difference. Males are typically noticeably larger — often around 4.5 to 6 kg — while females are usually around 3 to 4.5 kg. Males also tend to be broader through the head and jowls once mature. If size matters to you, this is the difference to weigh.

Temperament

There are tendencies, but treat them as tendencies rather than rules. Desexed males are often described as slightly more easygoing and affectionate; females as slightly more independent and, in some cases, more particular about who they like. In practice, individual personality, early socialisation and how they were raised matter far more than sex.

A well-socialised male and a well-socialised female will both be affectionate, gentle companions. Our temperament guide describes the breed rather than the sex, because that is where the real consistency lies.

Allergies

Cats produce the Fel d 1 allergen in their saliva and skin, and males generally produce more of it than females, with desexed males producing less than entire males. If someone in your household has mild allergies, a female may be the better choice — though the effect is modest next to the breed difference. Read our guide to Russian Blues and allergies.

Health

Both sexes are generally healthy. Desexing removes the reproductive health risks for females and reduces roaming and fighting for males. Your vet will advise on timing — see our desexing guide.

So how should you choose?

Meet the kitten rather than picking a sex. In our experience families connect with a particular kitten’s personality, and that match matters far more. Tell us what you are looking for and we will help you choose — that is part of our adoption process. Browse our available kittens or ask us.
